As a part of the workshop "unprivacy", a group of students has dedicated to research the Design project of “Borrowed Space” which is about the privately owned space in public space. In this study, the relationship between individual independence and social control has been tested based on public observation. My role was leading a concept idea and design strategies.
Nowadays, the boundary of public and private space is becoming ambiguous, so that any space could be transformed to private space or public space temporarily or permanently, they stand in between. Noverlist, Ray Olderburg described this space as “the third place”
In “the third place”, people can easily controlled over their behavior by tangible or intangible restraint unconsciously and social constrains are most dominant elements that affects on this phenomenon.
Then, are there any elements to make things to happen or not to happen in privately owned public place?
To answer this question, we are trying to examine how people’s behavior can be controlled by restriction and how people interact politically when they want to get individual liberties in public sector.
We decided to conduct our experiment in the city tram setting up a fake reserved seat. Because the tram space taken by passenger is always not fixed, it is sort of borrowed place. Sometimes, the space is negotiated by various conditions such as type of passenger, daily time and so on. Also, the operation system depends on the agency that is relatively closed to environmental, economic, political or social issue.
